FC Bayern Munich is the most famous and most successful club in the history of German soccer. They have won 23 German championships, and have been known as "German Record Champion" ever since winning their 10th German championship in 1987.
Munich are always on the top of the German league and represent Germany in international club events like the UEFA Champions League. Famous players like Oliver Kahn, Gerd Müller, Bastian Schweinsteiger and Philipp Lahm have played or are still playing for this German club.
Bayern Munich's history is a story filled with success. Until today, Bayern Munich has won 23 national titles and 16 cup titles. The club itself was founded in 1900 led by Franz John.
On February 27, 1900, the MTV Munich (Männer Turnverein München, Munich's sports department) had a meeting in a restaurant. People were arguing about the soccer section of the MTV Munich. So, 11 members of the soccer section left the restaurant and met at another place.
They decided to start a new soccer club and called it F.C. Bayern. This new club played its first game in March 1900 against 1. Münchner FC 1896. F.C. Bayern won the game 5–2.
In the 1962/63 season, it was every club's goal to qualify for the new Bundesliga, which started in 1963. At that time the other club from Munich, 1860 Munich, was better than Bayern.
The authorities of the DFB (Deutscher Fussball-Bund = German Soccer Union) decided that it would not be a good idea to allow to clubs from the same city in the Bundesliga, so they decided to give 1860 Munich the license for the new Bundesliga.
FC Bayern Munich's dominance started in the 1964/65 season. The young Gerd Müller scored 33 goals in 26 games and Bayern Munich finally qualified for the Bundesliga.
Since then, Munich has dominated the Bundesliga like no other team. In 1969, they became the first team ever to win the league and German Cup double, a feat they pulled off while playing only 13 players the entire season! They have won more Bundesliga championships than any other team.
They were able to sign the best German players as well as some international top talents that helped them to be the favorite in international events as well.
A tribute to the 2013 Bayern Munich club
The most successful year in club history was 2013. After Borussia Dortmund had won the league title for the previous 2 seasons, Munich invested a large amount of money in the team. They paid $45 million for Spanish star Javier Martinez. It was the most expensive transfer in the history of the German Bundesliga.
Everyone knew 2013 would be a very successful year for Munich. They not only dominated the German league, but also the German Cup. On May 25, 2013, Munich also beat their German rival Borussia Dortmund in the final of the UEFA Champions league.
